The Maritime and Port Authority of Singapore said Wednesday it has become the world first seaport to offer wireless broadband service to all ships calling at the Port of Singapore.

"Ships in Singapore can now enjoy seamless connectivity with each other and with shore-based customers and business partners," the MPA said in a statement. "Activities that can be done onshore, such as regulatory filings, broadband communications, live remote video and security surveillance, can now be replicated offshore.

The authority said the system, called WISEPORT, has received strong interest from industry players, "including marine and technology companies and government agencies who have subscribed to the service."

There will be an onboard demonstration of the system on a vessel at sea today.
